Our last destination was visiting a friend in Florida along with a business meeting. As we prepared our trip back we were told us to visit St. Augustine. We weren’t interested in cities but when I learned it had the oldest fort in America, I was thoroughly intrigued.
So much so that we had to make a pit stop on our way back to Maine to see the oldest fort. I grew up in Rhode Island and visited yearly the old forts in Jamestown and Newport.
Walking around them made you wonder what it was like here hundreds of years ago.
That was until the last visit at Fort Wetherell in Jamestown. I was walking alone that day through the tunnels when people started yelling to get out.
There was a shooting. That was the last time I had visited Fort Wetherell. Today is is covered in graffiti as it was when I began talking my boys there 30 years ago.

The optimal time to explore san marcos in St Augustine is early in the morning when the crowds are lighter, and the weather is typically cooler. If you prefer a more serene experience, aim to arrive as soon as the fort opens to avoid the midday rush.
Additionally, visiting on weekdays can offer a quieter atmosphere compared to weekends when the site tends to be busier.
That’s exactly what we did, we went in the morning of a weekday and it was still pretty busy. I believe it was school vacation week for some schools across the country.

Beware you will have to pay for parking though with the meters it is not expensive if you don’t stay for more than 3 hours. We spent about an hour there at the oldest fort in the continental United States.

However, beware of traffic and parking fees. To go to a restaurant it cost about $20 to park at them. We ended up going back to our hotel and eating elsewhere. It was just too congested for our rural life liking.
